How far can ladders stick out over the back of a car

How far can ladders stick out over the back of a car as i just sold my ladders but the person i sold them to cannot pick them up until 2 weeks time so as i needed them moved straight away i said i will move them. I have put the ladders on the roof rack but they stick out 2 foot over the back of the car and i was wondering if the police seen me would they stop me as it does look stupid being on a small car . I know it would be best to move them in the day but i was thinking of moving them at night when there ain't many cars on the road but if i got stopped i bet the police would have something to say.

Just tie an old red t-shirt to it and away you go

i assume you are talking 2ft back and front or 4ft total??
if you travel at night you need lights to mark the ladder rather than a static marker

Up to 1m rear over hang is ok but recommend it is clearly marked.

From 1m - 2m rear overhang MUST be clearly marked.

From 2m - 3.05m a marker board must define the end of the load and it must be illuminated at night.
