Two questions:

1. What sort of percentage of properties in the UK have a cylinder/f&e based system (rather than combi or unvented)? Anybody know approx... or just an idea from your experience...?

There are about 17 M homes.

Boilers last 10 years.

Last 10 years 56% of boilers fitted have been combis.

Its anybodies guess but I would suggest about 50-60% are combis by now.

The manufacturers probably have a better idea but keep it secret!

read a report about the coming change in the wobble number of gas, in the report it said something like 60% are combi now. so agile guess is about right

Tony, I have 1400 customers who's boilers I service on an annual basis.

over 500 are over 10 years old.
145 are over 20 tears old
26 are over 30 tears old
7 are older than that, with my grandads bbu being in its 41st year.

I have less than 7% combi boilers.

Oops! Well the second question was going to wonder at how many cylinders had the older more unsafe immersion heaters with no safety cut off...?

Q2 , nearly all of them. Many are only there as backup so almost never get used.

My mothers house has got a direct cylinder heated by an eastham maxol 12c gas bf heater. In 30 years it has only needed a new gas valve assy once. Most economical water heater and hot water cylinder supply you can get. Never any problems

Liked the weigh in myself after a combi conversion. Strange how some cylinders weighed little and only got £25 a go. And others weighed a lot heavier and got £40 a go. Different graded i suppose. Theres no conning a scrap man, they are nearly always big egors and intelligently numb on the side of menace
