You only need 2 wires for the main incoming line, but 3 wires are needed from the main BT master socket to any extension slaves. Terminals 2, 3 & 5. 2 & 5 being line & three is to do with the ringers.

Not these days. Very few, if any, modern phones require the "bell" wire to "ring".
Not sure now days, but at one time you could get away with it, but needed to use another master socket. But its been a few years since i was involved with any phones.
Modern phones work fine on two wires, the older mechanical phones, needed the full complement, just to prevent additional mechanical phones from 'tinkling', when a number was dialled on one of the other mechanical dialled phones.
Why not go Wi-Fi and wireless.
It was just for the landline - now VOI
There will be no more landline . Wireless voip via your router.
