How to build a fire partition and door?!

Hi

We've been told by building control that

"The door as well as glazed partition separating the 1st floor room from the ground to first floor staircase will need to be upgraded/replaced to 30 min fire resisting construction."

This is the door in question and the area that needs to be upgraded is the area below.
We can't get rid of the original feature here, and will need to put something behind the glass.

I'd really rather prefer a plaster board option, as replacing the glass will be cost probative. But then we'll have a thicker doorway that we will have to deal with!

Does anyone have any idea of what to do?

So many thanks for any ideas!

Dependant on why BC think this you may be able to offer an alternate approach such as a sprinkler system. Fire precautions seem to be a bit more personal preference with BC than msot aspects of the regs.

Is that a stair coming up there? What works are you having done that has prompted Mr BC's response? Is this the ground floor you're stood on? Or is this the first floor and there's another floor above?

We've had a kitchen and a sprinkler system put in on the ground floor. This is the top of the stairs on the first floor coming up from the kitchen. BC doesn't care that there is a sprinkler system!

So much wasted money

Did you get it in writing that the sprinklers would alleviate this issue? So there are three storeys? Is it open plan downstairs? Some floor plans might help. I don't understand what works have been done that has provoked needing a sprinkler or for him to even walk up these stairs if the the only works are a new kitchen? This is one of those threads that's like pulling teeth ....

I'm sorry it's like pulling teeth!

I'm not asking for advice on getting building control to change their minds. They aren't going to, we've tried.

They have said that we have to put in a fire partition and a fire door here. The question isn't do I need to. I need to.

HOW would you do this? If we put a partition wall on the stairs side can this be attached to the floor and wall? Would that provide a fire partition, does the wall and door need to be contiguous or can we put the new fire door in the existing door frame?

Thanks

Not very grateful when you don't give full picture at the start. You never mentioned a sprinkler though this is a common way round such an issue

Leave the glass where it is and cover the existing frame with fireproof plasterboard on both sides.
Change door for a fire door.
Of course, as BC officers make up their own rules, ask them if this would satisfy them.

Thank you for your helpful response Johnny!

Stevie, and Freddie Mercury if helping clueless people on forums isn't a fun time for you, you don't need to do it! There's a lot of good things on TV! ♥️
