It's ridiculous. Pick a lintel and contact the local rep for the manufacturer and ask if they'll help you out. Builders ask lintel reps for specs on lintels all the time so it is quite a common request. Give them a sketch of the opening with dimensions, and the details of the construction, and ask them which lintel you should use and if they can provide a justification. I'm sure somebody will help you out.
