How to Check Lighting Wiring

Hi

I bought a house that had a triple lighting switch, one switch didnt work anything, but the previous owner said that it was connected to 2 ends of cable that come out into the garage. he had intended to add outside lights.

I now want to add the outside lights, how do I work out which cable is which and how do I connect them?
