I have a pole building shop with a lean-to along one side. The side of the lean-to is supported by 4x4 posts attached to concrete piers with post supports set into the concrete. The lean-to does not cover the entire length of the shop. I assume that this is because the last post position would be at a spot where bedrock is at the surface. I would like to extend the lean-to another 12 feet to cover the entire side of the building.

I thought about drilling three or four holes into the rock and setting in some bolts or rebar then making a concrete pier around the bolts. The concrete pier would be a couple of inches thick to be at the same level as the others. I figure that that would be enough depth to set a post support into.

My concern is drilling holes into the rock which is basalt and hard. I thought about using a masonry bit. I don't know why I would have to drill deeper than 3 or 4 inches, but would I even be able to do that? Or is there another better way to do this?
