I am trying to insulate a cold room in a 1900s house that has drafts coming up from a cavity beneath. The floors have been stripped and there is large gap under the skirting board that is about 5-8mm high and goes back about 20-50mm.

I want to prevent the air from coming up from the cavity without changing the look. My best guess so far is to put a 25 x 6mm strip of wood in the gap and then seal with decorator sealant. However, it is tricky to get a good seal without making it visible from an angle.

Any thoughts? Shoving paper in there seems far too much of a bodge!

You can get wood coloured sealant in a tube. No-one is ever really going to look that close.

Fill the gap with loft insulation, pushed in with a filler knife. Then do what Joe says, coloured silicone.

Thanks guys, the brown caulk seems to work well, although it looks disgusting on your hands!

Using blue masking tape to protect the floor and skirting makes life a lot easier.
