How to fix posts into sleepers?

i need to add some balustrade (decking style) around the perimeter of the raised patio. Patio is retaining with soft wood sleepers, not oak.

Other than bolt downs, what is the strongest and neatest way to fix 4x4 posts down into a sleeper?

A lot can depend on your carpentry skills but check out mortise and tenon, lap and maybe bridle joints....all of which are strong and able to be reinforced by dowels, screws or wedges.
