dont go to mad when tightening as its end grain its easy to strip the hole as the thread cuts the fibers on the way in
just think off the wood as a bunch string[fibres]
 
Thank you, that is very good advice. I do have the over-tightening habit, and at least on my plumbing diy projects it didn't work well on the plastic joints. The "hand-tight" term is too vague...
 
i tend to use no8x 1 3/4" then if you do over tighten i can go for 10x2" or 2.5" to get full grip but to be honest your talking once in a blue moon

Given that you had so much patience with me and that I am shopping for the last of the supplies, do you have any views on the glue? Is there one that is easier to work with than others?
