The waste pipe from my washing machine feeds direct into drain via an
opening in the ground beside the manhole frame. the opening 6in by 3in (about 15cm by 7cm). The manhole is beneath the fitted washing machine. there is 10 cm of clearance between bottom of washing machine and floor.

Foul smell has recently escape from the gap between wastepipe and the opening.

I would like know how I can seal the gap so as to stop the foul smell.

I very much appreciate for any help any of you may offer. thank you very much in advance.

Your waste pipe should be draining into a trapped gully and NOT a hole in the ground.
Of course you will get smells back into the room. :(

You need to seal up this hole and reroute your drainage properly as described.

And the manhole`s INSIDE    so it needs to be a sealed cover on the gulley too.

thanks for your replies. Sorry for not mentioning that the drainage is routed with straight pipe into the manhole via an opening next to manhole frame. but it does not have a trap and its does not seem to fix to any pipes inside manhole since I can lift the straight pipe up.

1) what is a proper way to route/drain a waste pipe, what is the connection looks like? could you provide a drain pipe connection diagram or drawing that I can refer to.
2) what seal do I need, do I need to buy a seal manhole cover or just the seal? the manhole is square.

Again thank you so much for your help.
