I'm helping a friend re-slate the roof of his old house. When he stripped off the old tiles he was left with a feathered eaves board with the first course of half tiles and he can't remember if these were on a batten or just on the eaves board. He also can't remember how the next course of slates was fixed. He thinks these might have been nailed onto the same batten as the half tiles. Any advice on how to start would be gratefully received.

put your first full slate on the roof. the bottom of the slate should be in the gutter the top of that slate will sit in the middle of a baton you should do this at each end then string line it for accuracy you can then see the nail holes for that slate put a baton there and your half slates should sit on that and the facia board

Probably both in the same batten, but nothing wrong with butting two battens one under the other to give more meat.. (assuming natual slate of course)
