Need to tighten the following central heating pipe:-

What is best tool to use to do this (won't hand tighten any further); and
Which way to turn to tighten (clockwise or anti-clockwise)?[/list]

There's a chance that the pipe may have been injured (scratched) when the job was done.....slight pressure (clockwise) with some slip joint pliers is acceptable, but don't overdo it!
At the end of the day, it may be best to cut the fitting out and replace with a new one.
John :)

Tightening it will do precisely squat.

I think BM is suggesting rotating the pipe or fitting in order to shift the O-ring a little or reposition the pipe in the fitting. ;).

Ultimately though you need to change the fitting and the section of pipe if it is damaged.

Also a chance you could get very wet when you touch the pipe. :D

No, sealant will not stop the egress of water on a fitting like that.

Reason being is that the problem is a faulty joint/fitting.

You may be able to move the joint to solve it at the moment but it will raise its head again.

Best bet is to do it properly this time and forget about it.

Isolate, drain and replace job done and done properly.

Worth checking (once pipe is drained) that the correct inserts have been used in the pipe(s). If inserts were omitted then there is a good chance other joints may fail. These are not a compression type fitting, they rely on a 'grab ring' to retain the pipe in place and an 'O' ring to make the seal.

Thanks for all the replies, contractor got plumber round and all joints opened, and then reconnected using fresh connectors.

Thanks again.
