I have purchased a new washing machine and prepaid for the old one to be taken away. Unfortunately, they wont take away the old one unless it is completely detached from the walls etc.

The tenants are not very good at DIY but so far they have managed to detach most of the water pipes etc, but they dont know how to detach the electrics as it is not as easy as removing the plug. I dont live in the UK so I can't drop by to see the problem. Any advice on how to detach the electrics would be appreciated.

If it connected to fused spur or a D.P. Switch & the tenants are not competent to diconnect it, then as a landlord it is your responsibility to ensure it is carried out by a competant person in a safe manner. :(

Why not get them to photo the connection, then you post it and we can confirm waht's what.

There's a few ways it can / is / was done:-

* Cable buried in wall to switch or f/ spur above counter
* Cable terminated in f/ spur below counter
* Simple plug (although it it was that easy you wouldn't be posting)
* Cable terminated into flex plate or simple j/box below counter which is isolated via above counter switch / f/spur

As long as there is isolation via a switch or f/spur then it's a simple job that anyone with a grain of sense could do/
