I live in a house built 1980.

Its got a carpeted living room. I wanted new laminate and have a friend who can fit it. Anyway took a fake chimney down and can see that under carpet there is under lay and under that is wooden laminate. Now I don't know why original owner laid carpet over it rather than remove old laminate. Anyway under the laminate is some fibrous sheets that look like under lay. It's very soft and fibrous. Just wanted to make sure that this is not what asbestos sheets are. See photo. Look under the laminate

No it’s the underlay for the laminate and can still be bought today.

I concur it's laminate underlay (fibreboard) not asbestos
