I can't find a free standing staircase.

What exactly do you mean by freestanding? Do you want something that is moveable which seems unlikely unless you have a huge landing or are you talking about a fixed stairs in which case any joinery works could measure up and make you one.
Have a google to check the regulations and relevant specifications for installing flights of stairs as the whole thing is a veritable can of worms.

Most sets of stairs that I have seen are the sort one sees in a normal house are covered up with plasterboard etc. once installed. On the other hand I have seen sets of stairs which are built with just the two main sides and stair treads built into them. My apologies for not knowing the correct terms
At the moment in our bungalow there is a set of cupboards which are recessed along one side of the passage. I propose removing them. The space left is wide enough and has sufficient depth to insert a set of stairs to the loft. I don’t believe that the stairs need to meet the normal building regulations of pitch etc. because they will only be used to access a loft which is not a living area.

Hi, I think what you are looking for is a fixed loft ladder or a space saving staircase, these are a little steeper and normally have what is known as paddle steps, this allows the tread to be wider at one side and narrower at the other, a straight custom made staircase will almost certainly require at least 2800mm in length, these space saver staircases take up around 1500-1600mm and are only around 500mm wide, there are many styles to choose from such as plain wooden to contemporary timber and metal, all very easy to install, building regulations do not exist because you are only accessing one room, another alternative would be a spiral staircase taking up about 1500x1500mm on the landing, I hope this helps and good luck.
