I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this. I have the above boiler and have lived here for 7 years no problems.
We always have the water turned to on all the time. For the last two weeks there has been noises coming from the water heater, like its filling up. We will be sitting downstairs and hear a noise like the toilet constantly flushing but its not the toilet its the water heater. Its been going for about 24hrs this time and I've just turned it off.

The boiler downstairs has the burner light flashing all the time too. We live in a rented house and have called the company that deals with it they came and checked it, but at the time it wasn't doing the noise and they said there's nothing wrong and left.

I am worried about it as I don't think its supposed to be constantly making noises and have turned it off at the plug. Only problems is now I have no heating. :(

I wonder if you mean a hot-water cylinder?

What colour is it? (this is not a joke)

With an electric immersion heater in it?

Or do you mean the gas boiler is making a noise?

Is there a cold-water tank in the loft? Have you looked at it?

Was the hot water unusually hot?
Was the noise anything like a kettle coming to the boil?

Is water coming out of any overflow pipes?

Please post some photos of what you have got, and say which of them is noisy.

Thanks for getting back to me I have included pictures of the boiler downstairs, with the burner light on. The hot water tank and the timer.

The sound is like its filling up with water. No we don't have anything in the loft.

Hope you can help.

aha, a white cylinder.

It is pressurised, and will have a pressure release valve which may release water into a dish near the cylinder that connects to a drain, or possibly it will release through a pipe that goes through an outside wall. Have a look for the overflow. If you can find it. point it out to the next person who is looking for a fault. It may possibly happen more when the water pressure is high. e.g. at night and when you have no taps running. Photograph the overflow if you can find it.

Very likely it needs servicing. Pressurised (unvented) cylinders need a qualified engineer due to the pressures involved.

Hi I can't find an overflow. I notice it more at night actually.
Is it normal for the burner light to be flashing on the boiler all the time then?
Also when you say it is pressured, its not going to blow up is it if there's something wrong with it?
Also can I ask you another question as you seem to be quite clued up... a while ago the white cylinder thing was making a really low humming noise (when the heating was on) it was so bad the house felt like it was shaking. I called an expert they said nothing wrong with it and left. It still kept making the extremly loud noise so I fiddled with all the knobs and I turned this knob (see pic) and the noise stopped. Do you know what this knob is for?

Thanks in advance

It's time you found a good local heating engineer. Try to get recommendations from friends and neighbours. When calling, tell them you have an unvented cylinder making odd noises, and ask if they are qualified to work on it.
