I am looking for a gas valve for my father-in-law’s Hot Air System

It needs to be “original” in the original wrapping etc otherwise the gas board will refuse to fit it and then condemn the system.

They told me I need and ACG Fanfare 25/32 valve with a GC No of 42 988 08.

Can you help or advise. My F-i-L is in his mid 80’s and not keen to have to go through the stress of have a full radiator based new central heating system installed at his late age – very unlikely to live long enough to reap any benefit as he puts it.

Goodness me thats an old unit(not you FIL)I seem to remember the last one I saw was 15/20 years ago.
I cannot remember what gas valve were fitted to these.
Maybe if you could get the original gas valve details and post them a substitute could be found for it.
These WAU's contained asbestos and not many people would take them on.
If by the gas board you mean British Gas, then they have a good search system for obsolete parts. If they cannot provide one then your chances are poor.

crap! BG only list around a 1/3 of spares and anything over 7 or 8 years is declared obsolete in their minds!
as for the gas valve sorry i can't help, but if the OP could post a picture of said valve i'm sure someone could help with an alternative also we would need any numbers on the original valve that indicates its voltage 12, 24 or 240?

On something as simple as a WAU then they have probably identified the fault correctly. Had it been anything else then one might wonder.

BG will only fit brand new parts and the chances of finding one is going to be very small.

An independent is not bound by BG's own rules and some will fit used parts to keep old appliances going. But even the possibility of finding a used one is still small.

The most likely outcome is that you will have to have a new WAU as the very least. But a proper wet system will be far better and will add value to the house.

Prob old itt gas valve with knob that turns from pilot to main gas.
As has been said picture may help
Disregard kevingas other comment as its nonsense BG spares are second to none and they employ people to track down obsolete parts or alternatives

no they usually tell the customer that the part isn't available! despite the said item being readily available! in this case though i doubt anyone has a new valve of that type. as i said there is nearly always a different valve available that can be used.

kevindgas,If you knew anything about how BG's parts search worked you would put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.

I won't argue, as I can't possibly know otherwise. BUT we've all been to jobs where BG have condemned and sent rep around, when we KNOW parts are available. This was particularly the case a 2/3 years ago where they were telling customers thta parts aren't available for 552's etc.

I had a customer give me a hard time because I fitted an renewal fire to an obsoltete boiler. I said they were wrong, phoned baxi in his presence, and got confirmation that parts are available.

The client had already paid a deposit for new boiler, so he phoned BG got his deposit back and the boiler repaired.

But maybe things have changed. I thought though, that BG would not look for anything if the appliance is declared obsolete?

OP do as suggested and post details of valve - you never know!

Contact Johnston and Starley WAU manufacturers, they will be able to help or phone gas appliance spares in Preston. They have got me out of a hole a few times when BG said parts obsolete.

Expertgasman.
I dont disagree that, that is what some engineers tell people but that is not how BG system actually works .
An engineer can phone a help desk to TRY and locate parts that MANUFACTURERS not BG have said are obsolete and they can try several sources.
Also once a part that is not stocked nationally is ordered around 5 times in a year it is then automatically stocked if its avialable

Tosh. I've earned a nice few bob from people who were told by BG that the parts for their boiler were obsolete. In fact, I can't think of only one company that is worse when it comes to this: Homesmurf.
