I want a nice, big desk

I've searched everywhere, am after a fairly big (wide and deep) desk, standard rectangle top on it (I'm pretty sure of that) and dont want all the added on towers, CD racks, pen holders etc.

Any ideas where to look? Ive tried the usual Argos, Ikea, Amazon blah blah and even a few specialist websites but they are more like Mr Sugars desk, i.e over £1000+

Any recommendations guys?? Surely buying a nice, solid looking desk that isnt an Argos special cant be that hard??

I have seen loads at different auction houses. You could try your local auctioneers.

Years ago, before we saw the light and converted to laptops, my first wife and I decided to convert our small third bedroom (which was just being used as a store room) into a computer room.

I bought some worktop material - the sort of things you use in kitchens - and supporting 2x2 timber and built a worktop/desk along two walls of the room. It was solid, would support just about anything (including my wife sitting on it) and didn't cost much.

I didn't bother, but it would have been fairly easy to add drawers or cupboards underneath.

Exactly why I suggested auctions, these directors do like to update their offices and when they do some desks end up at auctions.

I've seen some crackers go for less than £200.

Second hand office furniture dealers are good IMO.

I'd echo the second-hand office furniture dealers if you have one close enough to you and can get it home or arrange for delivery at a reasonable price. I acquired many useful desks/benches, filing cabinets and similar things in perfectly good condition for a fraction of the new prices.
