An undocumented immigrant in the U.S. is a person living in the country without valid, current legal immigration status. This includes individuals who entered without inspection

You know when MBK is drowning in his own irrelevant blarney

This is the first time I have really felt the full force of it. Usually, I have only been an observer. My discussions with MBK have mainly been about the law, and at least with those there is a possibility for argument, even over clear cut cases. But this is just nuts. Basically, full on denial that illegal immigrants pay lots of income tax either through the US version of PAYG or through a tax return using an ITIN.

Here is Yale University's take. They quote the CBO, which is the equivalent of our Office of Budget Responsibility:

Background

Unauthorized immigrants pay a material amount in federal taxes. The Budget Lab estimates that in 2023, unauthorized immigrant workers paid $66 billion in federal taxes, with roughly $43 billion in payroll taxes2 and $22 billion in individual income taxes (see chart below; note that this does not include state and local tax payments). This is underpinned by the consistent finding that a majority of unauthorized immigrants likely pay federal taxes. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) noted in a 2007 report that between 50-75% of unauthorized immigrants pay some combination of federal income and/or payroll taxes. Doing so minimizes the legal jeopardy of both the immigrant and their employer. In fact, North and Houstoun (1976) found that while 73% of unauthorized immigrants paid federal income taxes through withholding, only 32% filed a return. Since most Americans’ taxes are over-withheld, leading to a refund when they file, this suggests a strong possibility that many unauthorized immigrants already overpay federal taxes. Similar to this is the lifecycle overpayment of unauthorized immigrants, who often pay Social Security and Medicare taxes but are ineligible for benefits when they retire.

Unfortunately, the pair of you are ignoring the details and have no knowledge of withholding tax

Did you miss the link to the Congressional Budget Office report from 2007. They are the equivalent of our Office of Budget Responsibility.

This is so tiresome. Just man up and admit you were wrong. Like I do. It is a sign of strength, not weakness.

how many poor illegal immigrants generate income subject to withholding tax without working?

Do you think they are all stock traders and millionaires?

I've asked a question - how does an illegal immigrant with no right to work pay income tax?

Given the fines for employing illegals, do you think employers put it through the books?

plenty of people (like me) pay income tax in the US, we are not illegal immigrants.

Having worked in the USA, many years ago, I have some knowledge of how the system works.

They don't have a fully integrated PAYG system.

Most employers withhold some of your salary each week or month to cover income tax and send it to the IRS. You then file a tax return to tidy up the difference at the end of the tax year.

I assume you worked there legally?

therefore had nothing to fear filing a tax return.

However this...

Job done.

No need.
Nosenout travels to america illegally. Nosenout has no right to work. He wants to get a job and pay taxes.

- employer says - you've no right to work, I will get fined if I employ you, plus you have no tax number
- nosenout applies for a tax number.
- nosenout gets deported.
