Ideal Boiler, microbore, power flush

Hang on, where did all this sludge come from?

The house is only a few years old. Has the owner been constantly repressurizing the system? If he hasn't and the filling loop hasn't been left on, there simply can't be that amount of contamination from a single fill of water.

Has there been cross contamination in the Istor? Has the hot water looked dirty occasionally?

This doesn't sound like a housebuilder fault to me. If you tried to generate significant quantities of sludge in a sealed system you would really struggle.

In a microbore system the sludge normally ends up in the rads because the water velocity is so high in the ubore.

Why not take a rad off and look inside. Don't confuse black water with sludge, the latter is the consistency of tar.

Housing estate near me built about eight years ago.Potterton Suprimas those high pressure thermal store jobs in the loft and ground floor rads all part of a drop pipe system and system not flushed on commisioning meant sludge city.

BG 3 star and they are never away from it.

On going legal action or was.

Rads burst cylinder thing burst you name it those poor people have every problem under the sun and some of them are still having problems with the BG famous 'you need a power flush' advice thang.

Also clocked a brand new combi boiler system six month old fitted with non-barrier plastic pipe-work that had more black sludge in it than I've ever seen.

Can you explain how a system 'not flushed on commissioning' developed into 'sludge city'? Are you suggesting that some flux in the water caused enough corrosion to block the pipework and rads?

When I last went to Center Parcs in Penrith they had a massive problem with sludge, this was becuase of rodents knawing through plastic heating pipes. Systems were being topped up twice a week.

Are there a lot of rats in Glasgow

Don't think it was just 'some flux' in the system I think it was a tad more than that.

Story was that the contractor simply filled up the systems and turned on the heating and that was that, for a wee while things were fine, just a wee while though.

Obviously there was some design flaws too but basically it was down to poor flushing and installation work as I understand it.

Plus the suprimas and thermal stores were just the icing on the cake.

Yes we have rats here mainly two legged ones it has to be said

The sick kids hospital here which was built late seventies,I think, had major problems with flux in its plumbing system which became contaminated as a result.

The whole lot was ripped out over a period of about five years just after the hospital open whole wards were systematically re-plumbed and every bit of copper pipe was tagged as evidence.

I worked with one of the charge-hands of the firm that did the remedial work.

Most of the remedial work was done at night and at weekends at day-work rates on a time and lime basis.Remedial firm made a fortune,I believe.

He may have been slightly exaggerating ,I don't know, but he said that four inch copper pipe bore was down to half inch on some parts of the pipe length.

Seems the original plumbers were dipping lengths of pipe from scaffold platforms into tubs of self-cleaning flux that were on the ground when they were doing over head pipe-work.

Original contractor was taken to court and went bankrupt.
