My Response 120 boiler packed up a few months ago and several parts were changed out by the ideal / homeserve engineer at no cost. However we have been experiencing what I now known to be called 'explosive start' and the boiler failing to start at all. The engineer came out yesterday and apparently we are now on the list to be authorized for a replacement boiler. My question is has anyway had the experience before and what range of boilers would they generally offer to replace with. I should know whether I will have to pay for the replacement or not by early next week.

I wouldn't have Ideal fit one of their new boilers, even if it was offered for free.

All are a load of unreliable carp.

See if you can get some money out of them instead and fit a proper make.

Seconded :D

Sounds like the heat ex has gone. Ideal dont fancy the cost

pay them nothing. the response combi is a crock o' shiyte from top to bottom. ask for a vaillant or a viessman as a replacement. ideal are completely unable to manufacture a reliable boiler - i see many that have failed just out of the one-year warranty period. that one-year warranty just says 'if we could give you a shorter warranty, we would' .

sorry, ideal. but it's a fact.

From the company that gave us the best boiler ever made too ,the Ideal E type/Mexico series one,two & three.

A pretty damning indictment.

Thanks guys for this - a pretty damning verdict there! I will wait to see on Monday what they suggest / offer but I cant really see Ideal offering me another manufactures boiler as a replacement of their own? I guess I can only learn from this and make sure I avoid Ideal in future homes!

One other note, I believe the heat exchanger was one of the parts they replaced last time around, this time he mentioned something about the ignition part or something (apologies for my vagueness there!)

cant see you getting a free new boiler for failed ignition. maybe the new heat exchanger has popped due to the explosive ignition.

even if you do get a new boiler it will be an icos HE, hardly much of an improvement.

Explosive ignition on these is usually caused by a failing ignition unit, usually at about 6/7 years or heat exchanger blocked with scale. I was told last year the hx is now obsolete so I guess if its a new one under warrany they owe you a new boiler. To be honest even though new ideal boilers are junk they are still better than the response!

Well, I have just found out that a replacement boiler has been authorized free of charge and will be Ideal Isar HE 35. Unfortunately by the look of the reviews on some sites that I have just had a quick scan through, I could be getting to know the engineer very well over the coming years!

Still, I cant grumble too much about getting a replacement boiler for free so I will reserve judgement until something goes wrong.

Apparently the reason they could not repair the response was due to a part called something like a 'bayer' or 'bayent' (I couldn't quite understand the guy on the phone). The part in question was made by a firm who have now relocated to Italy and no longer provide that part for that model. This, I believe, was the deciding factor in providing it to me free of charge.

Cue, the horror stories who have had experience with the Isar...!
