Ideal Classic Boiler - Just started to make a whirring noise

Two months ago I took the fan motor off the top of my boiler and replaced the upper bearing with a high temperature sealed bearing. I could not replace the lower one without removing the whole fan unit from the exhaust manifold - a job for the professionals. And if you've gone that far you might as well replace the fan unit anyway, instead of fillding about with bearings. (A pair of high temperature bearings cost about £30.)
Anyway, the whining went away for a bit, but it is back now, and I'm about to get the fan unit replaced.
In my experience, my advice would be: don't waste time replacing bearings, get the fan unit replaced.

Hi All,

Well the fan on the 260 failed again having shutdown the CH system. I found that when I placed a meter across the power feed to the fan i got 240V but the fan was not turning. The bearings were fine so I knew the problem had to be something else. This time I started to remove the power connectors from the fan so i could read the resistance across the terminals and found that one of the terminals had started to break away. The reading was open circuit which meant the 240V was not creating the magnetic filed required to drive the motor. On closer inspection I found that the damaged terminal also didn't have the copper coil connection to the live input feed which was why the motor was not spinning.

At htis point there was no point in trying to repair the fan any further and it was a case of getting a new fan which I got of Ebay. We are now back up and running so that should be me sorted for the next three years.

By the way i think the terminal damage was caused when the fan seized last time and the heat from the motor caused the plastic around the connector to bake and it became brittle.

When a FAN in these biolers fail you find that the heating comes on and the burners start up and then within a short period of time (1-2 mins) the burners will shut off.

And opening the combustion chamber where the fan is situated should only be done by a gas reg engineer!

What Tony said!!
Ps there are actually 3 current fan models 30-80 then 100 models and then the slimline version 171461, 171462, 171463.
If the flue collector hood is not put back on properly or someone tries to remove fan wrongly (as I've seen) then the combustion is badly effected leading to extremely high co!!
