Hi my ideal classic boiler is 17 years old and works well my immersion heater is in the airing cupboard and is on all the time does this need to be on I have just moved in so not sure what to do. The house is a large 4 bed my electric bills have been very high during last winter could this be the cause

Yes quite possibly. If your gas boiler is capable of producing sufficient hot water then the immersion heater should only be required as a backup or at times of really high demand, so turn it off and see if the situation improves.

What I find puzzling is why you need to ask, why not just turn it off anyway and see what happens?
