Hi,

I have an Ideal Classic FF340 CH boiler. A few months ago it packed in. Boiler fires up and burns for a few minutes, then turns itself off. Called an engineer in and he said the bearing on the top of the fan on top of boiler was sticking. He drenched it in WD40 which sorted it for a few weeks.

However, further drenching by myself didn't get it moving again. I bought a replacement bearing (6 x 19 x 6) and just fitted it, with a little bit of WD40 again to loosen it up, but the same problem came back. Boiler still shutting down after a few minutes.

Any ideas? Bottom bearing on fan is fine - spins very well for a few minutes. Maybe the new bearing just needs a little time to loosen up?

If it's not the fan, then what else could it be?

:)

Pete.

The fan is faulty if it fails to spin when it's supplied with correct voltage. When they fail they need to be replaced or refurbed by a specialist. DIY repair of a fan is not advisable even for a RGI.

........especially with WD40. Not worth the effort, replace the fan, they're not that expensive. For safe operation afterwards get it done by a pro, who will ENSURE your boiler is safe.

Points taken. RGI coming tomorrow. I've been changing bearings on cars for years though. Piece of cake really. Fans coming in at £95, plus installation. :) P.

UPDATE - RGI came round yesterday and it turns out the CH pump is knackered. Boiler was firing up and heating water, but pump wasn't circulating hot water around the system. Water in boiler got too hot so overheat stat kicked in and shut things down. £70 for a new pump, £70 labour. RGI couldn't find a merchant open on a bank holiday, so coming back Monday to fit it.
