Hi, anyone able to give me some details on this very old wall mounted boiler. Does it just supply heating or hot water as well. There is a Red Coloured Flexicon 8/0.5 Expansion Tank under the sink, what function does this have in relation to the boiler.

First Post, thanks

Artey

dont think wcf can be pressurised so the exp vess you got needs checking out. Have you been in the house long, I would suggest you get it checked out asap.

Can supply heat for both depends on your particular system.
Expansion vessel for system, means you have a sealed system.
WCF means you have an open flued appliance which needs regular service.

Hi, its a house my brother is looking to buy. There is an immersion tank in the house and there appears to be a timer control there which has seperate settings for heating and water.

Most likely does both heat and hot water then.
Your brother should be looking to replace at least boiler if he buys.

Would confirm what twgas says - the WCF is not suitable for sealed systems only open vented systems therefore the system has been "modified" illegally if the expansion vessel has been connected to the heating system.

Thanks for that Giblets. Could the expansion tank be used for another purpose other than being for a modified sealed system

Very unlikely unless it's been connected to the rising main pipework to stop water hammer in which case it won't last long. Suggest you check where the pipe connection from the top of the EV connects into.

If it's a purpose made shock arrestor then there's no reason for it to have a short life.

It being under the sink is a strong clue that it's exactly that.

From the description above it sounds like someone has either incorrectly converted boiler to sealed system or fitted incorrect type of vessel to stop water hammer, in which case its a waste of an 8 litre flexcon unit

I've got the same thing on my boiler (Glow-Worm Fuelsaver F). There's a pressure gauge on the top of the Flexcon tank and it shows 0 BAR. The heating is working pretty well fine but I'm not sure how to increase the pressure or what to increase it to.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Colin
