For general DIY use you don't need to fork out 20 quid or more for a top branded one from Krone or Ideal Industries for example, just buy a cheap one which looks like this....

...and definitely DO NOT buy one which looks like this...

You'll want a tester to go with that, so it might be worth your while buying a kit which has the insertion tool, a tester and crimping tool for making up patch leads all included.

No one is right all the time but egress was the right word.

Ingress and egress are very common terms in the cable TV industry.

Indeed they are. But even without knowing that I would have thought the meaning was pretty obvious.

Ingress of signals - Signals (in this case unwanted) getting into the cable.

Egress of signals - Signals (also in this case unwanted emissions) getting out of the cable.

What's incorrect about the terms?

They're not the terms used in the EMC business. I can't speak for the cable TV business, but I did manage a TV studio for a while, and I don't recall those terms being used there either.
