Im looking for ideas for my borders, I want to put a fabric membrane down and then cover it with something like slate or something similar, Im open to ideas but would need about 1.5 ton and money is tight swo £120 per ton is a lot to me at the moment. So what are the alternatives and where could I buy it, Im in kent.

if youre in kent then youre cheapest option would be beach shingle. most builders merchants or small tipper deliveries will do it for about £35-£40 a tonne.

bark chippings are also a cheap option. even cheaper if you phone up some local tree surgeons. they pay to dump it, so any local ones will happily drop it off for free. most looks quite green to start but once its rotted for a few months it will go a nice dark colour.

when you can afford it, cover it over with membrane and then put the slate on

cheers thermo, with baby on way cash is tight at the moment :)
