We have just moved into an oldish (1920s) property that seems to be lined entirely with plasterboard. I want to put up some shelves, coat rack, etc. etc., and am trying to figure out what fixings to use.

I think (based on a hole I drilled this morning, though this was in a wall in a new extension) that there is no gap between the plasterboard and the masonry, but how can I be sure this is the case in other parts of the house? Is it a case of drilling pilot holes to check?

And if it's dot and dab fixed plasterboard, what's the best method for fixing into it? (I've read somewhere that drilling through the plasterboard and into the masonry, using a wallplug and and extra long screw is the way to go).

Any help very gratefully received!

Just drill hole to a depth of plug beyond plasterboard and add 20mm to screw length.
