idiots up mountains

Apart from the RAF mountain rescue is a voluntary service in this country and should be left that way. Rescuers do it because they want to and there is an element of glamour and even elitism involved. Also danger discomfort and inconvenience.
We'll never be free from fools and incompetent people, they're just part of the human race. Someone has to look out for them....
Most of the emergency services around here are manned and ladyed by long established families The lifeboat cox took over from his dad as did his dad before him anon and there are loads of people on the waiting list, god knows why. its dangerous, you don't get paid and not often thanked.some of the things you see stay with you all your life.

every now and then you get free wellies even a torch and on a good day some new overalls oh! and wet weather gear that never keeps out the wet weather and sometimes they give you some batteries for your pager.

But some get to drive the most brilliantly well kept, boats in the harbour a credit to the guys who jockey to crew them ...no doubt whatsoever.

Now to 'save money' the MOD wants to privatise rescue services. This means helicopters will no longer be available free to assist Mountain Rescue Teams etc.
The Insurance Companies are rubbing their hands in anticipation......
If you're not insured and are rescued by helicopter better hope selling your house will pay for it...!

crying shame.
Also what is a shame is that if voluntary services etc get any public grants then it has to be used in certain ways only.

This why the air ambulance is reliant on donations... that way it can spend the money where needed.

With grants, they can only use it for ceratin things. (like equipment but not expenses etc)
