Ignition issue on Whirlpool Gas/Glass hob

Whirlpool Gas Hob AKR 301/NB/S.

Initially ignition would not stop clicking, turned off at mains, removed and cleaned electric switch.

Now will only fire ignition intermittently, makes a whirring sound but sometime will not ignite at all.

I know I can buy a new ignition generator, but worried about spending £40+ and this not being the issue, any advice? any way to check?
