I am about to replace a furred up immersion heater. It makes all the noises of a furred up kettle.

Is there anything I should be aware of or wary of before starting this (besides draining the tank.) ?

Lots can always go wrong in plumbing! Read all you can first - search this site.

If it's a top fitting heater, you don't need to drain the tank, there again, if your heater is scaled up, you may need to drain the tank and then use a wet vac to suck the scale out of the bottom of the tank.
