i've been told that my immersion heater needs to be wired into a unswitched fcu and not into the switch it is in at the moment
Who told you that?

do you know why they said such a thing?

Is the switch exposed to water splash, or wet hands?

What do you know about the circuit that supplies the immersion heater? Does it supply anything else? What Amps rating is its fuse or MCB?

i rent the house out to students and had a gas fitter out to service the back boiler and do any other checks for the cert needed and he said we needed to have the switch changed

from what i understand it is on its own circuit will have to find out

is the cupboard inside the bathroom, and can it be opened, without a key or tool, by a person who is wet from the bath and might be touching a bath, shower, basin or tap?

no you have got to leave the bathroom and the cupboard is on the landing

It sounds to me as though you gas fitter is wrong.

You are required to have a double pole isolator switch local to the immersion heater.

Unless there is some reason we don't know about, it sound alright as it is.

Could you contact your gas fitter an ask him why he thinks it needs to be altered?

had the gas fitter back out today the unswitched fcu had to be fitted onto timer controls . its now been fitted so hopefully this is now the end of that saga

Are you still left with a double pole isolator near to your immersion heater?

not sure had the electrition in to sort everything out so hopefully its now all ok but will find out
