immersion query

don't touch the cable or probes? I'll have to touch them to do the test?! i've tested continuity so the stat is not working, so this test is just to prove in other words voltage is getting the to heater (ie the fuse hasn't blown)?

hold the plastic part of the probe not the metal.

don't worry i'll call the
ambulance-016.gif

ok will do. just to double check, couldn't i just take the fuse out of the connection unit (right next to it) and test continutiy between the 2 ends of the cartridge?

no i said there was continuity between the L and T terminals - which proved the stat was working ... and after getting 19.6 ohms on the resistance reading from N to T it proved the element was Ok to (even though it is slightly above the 17.6 or whatever rating would be exact)!

do a continuity test then if it makes you feel safer.
put the probes in the two cable holes on the stat do you get continuity?

yep, with power still off, meter bleeped between L and T holes. so stat is OK.
one question: what range of resistance would mean the element was faulty, even if not 100% faulty? My reading was 19.6

tested N to T on resistance, the 200K setting. Just flashed a few random numbers then went back to 1. (which is the normal setting).

It does not sound to me as if you are competent to make these measurements if you cannot interpret the reading you have obtained.

An immersion element is about the most basic circuit you can find, a resistor in series with a switch!

As I said before, voltage measurements will probably be more relevant. It will not work without an applied voltage!

the only way someone can become competent is by learning... thats what she is trying to do...

something worry if it bleeps on both.

see the two screw holes on the stat that holds the wires in both sides.

Seco you will need that ambulance yourself . If you need the number of a brickie to repair that wall you are banging your head against just ask.

thanks mrmoo. i agree with what you are saying, but to defend agile in a way, he was thinking of mine and other's safety. i am trying to learn/do want to learn, but am also sure beforehand that i am doing it safely. don't wanna put myself or anyone else in danger.
