I feel a total idiot for even posting this, as maybe its blindingly obvious but which way is off

Alternately you could have waited and see in which position the water gets hot.

But thats only if it is working!

The boiler heats the water, immersion is only a backup.

But if the boiler fails its a very important backup and should be tested every few weeks!
