Our house has a 50s hardboard boxed in staircase and landing balustrade, I think all there is behind the hardboard is a couple of upright spindles to keep the hardboard from flexing.

The bottom newel is 70mm and the top one is double width shared with the landing balustrade. I would like to improve the look somewhat over gloss painted hardboard.

Has anyone else done this? I think I'd need to replace the newel base if I was going to do a new baserail, handrail and spindles, and probably would have to do the landing too, which would end up being a huge project.

I was wondering if anyone else has done up a 50s staircase, and what you did.

For that much you could get some decorative wood panels (like the radiator covers) and put that over the existing panels, maybe have a two colour deal going on. Its interesting, easy and cheap!
