I'd like to get a ceiling light replaced with a fixed dimmable spot downlight (luceco EFT60W40). Could another one be added in-line?

Yes, just connect them both to the same terminals.

You will need a compatible dimmer that can work with only 12W.

The room, as a result of various alterations, that has one quite off-centre hanging light. The recessed mock tudor ceiling is low and the (bed)room doesn't get much natural light anyway so I thought a pair of fixed dimmable spots up in between the beams would be better.

If you don't live in a Tudor house, why not get rid of the anachronistic fake Tudor ceiling excrescence?

Off-centre is another matter. Please let us know how well you like the two little recessed lights.

Thank you for such blunderingly uninhibited helpfulness. I suppose it would be because as I may have mentioned, I already have a ceiling and it is low enough as it is.

Many thanks.

You seemed to be saying that the "beams" in your fake Tudor ceiling were causing or exacerbating a problem. So I suggested getting rid of them, not making the ceiling even lower.

I put in a pair of 40W dimmable lights from Homebase in the end, one where the original off-ctr light was.

I figured that if I needed to leave an access hole to any new connection (in chocbox) that replaced the original ceiling rose, then I might as well put a light up there to cover the junction box access and put another to mirror it on the other side of the ceiling.

I had the skirting off upstairs so I managed to thread a retractable tape measure (with a drawstring attached to the end) between the joists to the ctr access holes. Pulled the new cable in with the drawstring.
