The two most senior members of the 15 sailors and Marines held in Iran have shunned offers of money from the media for accounts of their ordeal, it emerged yesterday.

Ah, well done...

Nothing to do with the following I guess...
[code:1]
Royal Navy Typical Ages
Lieutenant.......................£33,795 - 40,190
Lieutenant Commander 30 - 37 £42,570 - 50,983
Commander..............38 - 44 £59,747 - 66,046
Captain .............45 - 48 £69,189 - 76,741

Pay
All Naval Personnel are required to have a bank account. Salary will be paid directly into your bank account at the end of each month . [/code:1]

They'll need bell bottomed pockets next.

I thought I heard the party had a lieutenant and a second lieutenant, both young and presumably not at the top of the scales.

A lieutenant (Navy) and higher (Marine)... I guess they would not be too old... But that is not the point ..
With a well defined career ladder and reasonable pay ahead of them, I am sure they would shun a 'pay for story' situation ... Unless it was for charity where there may be some kudos - But I am thinking the officers at least would prefer the whole thing quickly forgotten.
Not a good image for the forces.

I wouldn't pay that much, if it is true that we do not provide proper kit for the guys at the sharp end.

But I wasn't really commenting on that aspect at all, just maybe providing reasons why the officers may not wish to relate their story for cash - but not too vigourously you may note.

empip

I would think a junior naval rating would be far less maybe 15k a year + deductions for board an lodgings

wonder if the board an lodgings were deducted at source while kidnapped ?

Hence the readiness to flog the story - if you see what I mean.
