Hi,

I need to rest a Catnic on a single skin wall but across it so I'll only have a bearing of 100mm. It's already quite a high load (underneath a bathroom) so would prefer to get the full 150mm as an absolute minimum.

How can I up my bearing size? Was going to build an engineering brick pillar and use a starter kit to tie the two together bu not sure if I can get away with a single stack of bricks or will have to do it 2 bricks wide....?

Cheers,

Worry not, immense loads can be supported by 100mm bearing. So long as it is not over a door opening or very close to the edge then a standard mortar bed will probably suffice.

I take it the lintel is at 90 degrees to the wall?

Ok good news, would it hurt to put that in anyway?

Yes lintel at 90 degrees to replace a load bearing wall. I was going to leave half a brick in on the old wall to make it up but it'll be a right pain when the room gets filled with furniture.

I wouldnt bother with a pier, if you are concerned though you could put an engineering brick padstone below the lintel to spread the load out a bit..
