Hi

Is it possible and how difficult would it be to add a power point to your house!? How much might that cost to do?

thanks

Which area of the property is it going in?

What is the construction of that area?

Where is the nearest point?

Is that point on the ring?

Is the existing wiring rubber?

Is there RCD protection for the circuit you are extending?

Have you got PEB's installed?

Hi - thanks for your response.
This is a question for a house i have purchased - it is a 1970's 1st floor flat. Not yet moved in - so dont know all the answers:

Which area of the property is it going in?
- Just a general question on whether it is posible, would be living room, main bedroom, spare bedroom.

What is the construction of that area?
? 1970's 1st floor flat.

Where is the nearest point?
In the room!

Is that point on the ring?
Not sure what is meant by this?

Is the existing wiring rubber?
Dont Know.

morning. No one on here can give you any realistic £ answer to your question because there are too many variables. (as you have already been asked) Best thing would be to get a Periodic inspection report done (an electrican does this) and take it from there.

Its vaguely like a check up to see what ypou have, what you should have and the state / condition of what is there

OK - fair enough that there are some things you don't know, like whether the wiring is rubber, but given the other things that you don't know about, like RCDs, equipotential bonding, what a ring final is etc, then if you want to get new sockets before you've spent the time learning then your only option is to get an electrician.

And only someone who goes to see the job can tell you what it will cost.

You should get it all inspected first, and you should get it done pronto as the work will be more easily done before you move in.

It would probably be best to use a registered electrician.

Thanks guys - i am thinking long term... i can live with it short term - it is not even essential, i was just intrigued to know a rough cost

Yes, you said that when you first asked.

How much might that cost to do?

But the problem is still that we cant see what you have, and as ban-all-sheds said

And only someone who goes to see the job can tell you what it will cost.

Which is true of any job and any forum. Or as one poster used to say, can't see it can't quote it.

Take ban-all-sheds advice, better safe than sorry

is that all? ah great thanks - i was thinking £200 or something..
thats good to know... this would also require making a hole in the wall and locating the wires and splitting the wires i guess!?

Where did I specify a cap on the price of the meal?

Good luck making holes in reinforced concrete walls.

fair point... i am a maccy d's man myself...

well, how else would you add a powerpoint without having to make a hole in a wall.?

cheers

If its flush fitting then yes you have to make a rectangular hole in the wall.
If its surface then all it needs is a box, so two screw holes.
But that is a minor point. The cost will depend on where the existing wiring is and how difficult it is to run wires from the existing to the new.

Your flat might be built of reinforced concrete with all of the wiring in steel tubes. many are.
If it is then you are looking at a meal for two with drinks at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons. possibly with transport via helicopter.

OR Maybe the wiring is under the floorboards and runs past the new socket position . Then you are lloking at a pub meal for two plus drinks (and a tip).

Or anything inbetween.
