When installing boilers/other heating equipment in lofts is it not a good idea in fact good practice or even a regulation to ensure all the requirements are in order to fit the appliance in that site BEFORE the installation is under taken,in fact i find it amazing that corgi will sign the installation off if these regs are not adhered to.

It must be a much easier job to install in a decked well lit safe area.

What is the use of saying all the requirements will be carried out after the installation ? This does not help the customer in anyway if they require repair/service work.

In fact i would go as far to say that it is an illegal act to install this way,if one was to ask the health and safety executive.

I know i might ruffle the feathers of the installers who do the job correctly, but then this comment is not levvelled at you its for all the arseholes who dont install correctly.

Peace....

Sorry Baxman............yes, to install in loft minimum requirements are boarded to boiler, permanent lighting, loft ladder and rail around......if installers fail to do this it should mean the installation fails building regs and can't be registered until it meets these. I see no problem in doing these things POST install but before commissioning....but i would agree not doing them before installing will be a nightmare.....poor light, balencing on joists etc etc...And corgi don't sign off installs...the RGI does based on his 'competant persons scheme membership'

Walked away from an unboarded loft last week, now it's an escalated call, do not drop!

No win situation.

Its not correct but many installers are so keen to get the job that they accept the houseowner if he says that he will put them in later!

If I was to go under the warrantee I would require a proper boarded floor but I would accept a temporary lead light fitted before I arrive. Never seen guard rails round the hatch though even in BG installs.

On a normal repair then I will repair the boiler whatever the situation but I tell the householder that I will not take any responsibility if I put my foot through the ceiling. I have never done that yet but an asistant did once!

Tony

went to one a while back that had a rail, it was in front of the boiler making the job harder than not having it.

Whats that Bax "They"re putting an escalator in" ??????

What can you do ??

fixed light, proper floor and fixed ladder are a must have, the guard rail is only a should have if reqd,ie boiler right on top of opening.

Stop feking whittling and finding a reason not to do a job. yes we know what regs should be but how hard is it to set up your own ladder and loft light and work on boiler. Fixed lighting may not be where you want it
Time it takes to send job back and explain to customer, job could be done and fixed.

I Never refused to go in any loft that didnt have proper requirements . BG used to even stipulate don`t use customers own loft ladder as you will not be covered in case of accident .
You will be getting as bad as our local authority who demand loft work is a 2 man job in case someone bangs there heads.

And you will find its a lot easier to install of moveable boards in a loft than having entire loft boarded ie running pipes and getting them to where you want without lifting make shift flooring or tongue and groove chipboard

You are obviousley one of those people who flout regs I did not write the regs but i do my best to adhere to them i know some of the regs are ****e but if the ****e hits the fan...............

How long have these regs been around then. Never heard off them.ME and BG fit them in lofts all the time without I use a tempory board but take it with me.

What would that be Andy an ironing board or a surf board.

I really do think the point is being ignored/overlooked or "just dont give a ****"
If you install an appliance that has inadaquate ventilation and a fatality occurs......

If you decide to work on a boiler in a loft area that is unsafe and a fatality occurs....

Please tell me the difference.

Spot on....

One question though... If you cant go into a loft without boards, then why are you allowed to go up there to fit 'em??

I use me noodle... If it is risky, sooty or full of spiders then the customer is out of luck
