I want to replace an old window with a double glazed unit which is wider. The existing window is approximately 1m wide and the new one will be approx 1.5m wide. The old Lintel, which I believe to be a cavity type, will have to be replaced with a larger one, I presume. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to go about this. The wall is cavity (brick and block) and is load bearing.

This sort of job is really for the professional and can be costly depending on what level its on.If it done incorrectly some part of the walls could collapse. Not trying to put you off,but is it really worth it for 250mm wider on each side? Are you trying to get more light into the room?

The window is in a small kitchen and is also at the front of the property. The adjacent window at the front is large (2.3m) and so I want to balance the visual impact of the proerty from the road. I do agree that 250mm each side does not warant the cost!
Anyhow thanks for your reply.
