Should I let a dealer install a new sunroof in a car? I want to install one on a Honda Fit (Honda Jazz in Europe)

If you want a sunroof in the roof of your car that would indeed appear to be a means of getting a sunroof into the roof of your car.

you should also bear in mind that a sunroof may not be a sunroof that you see in other cars, do ask first.

a sunroof fitted after manufactur of the car is usuallly a hole cut out and a plastic piece fitted.

a factory fitted sunroof can be (if you pay for it) electric, tilting and all singing all danceing, this is because when fitted there is no roof lining, chairs and other stuff in the way.

Ok, what I mean is are installed sunroofs/moon roofs reliable. the first response was kind of smart ass

Depends what you mean by reliable. If fitted properly it should fit nicely and not leak. It might spoil the look of the car though and it might affect it's value too.

i personaly have never had one, but i have been passneger in cars that have. (both types)

i can undestand why you call it a moon roof.

it can be annoying though because in the "retro fitted" ones there is no "screen / shield" to stop you seeing outside (or the moon as you pointed out) i found it very distracting, similaryly when it rains, but leek, none i had been in compained of leek (apart from the bloke who took it right out (this you are meant to be able to do) parked up, and it rained, but that was his fault not the fault of the sun roof

Here's an interesting fact for everyone. "Factory fit" sunroofs are not always installed at the factory

Someone I used to know once bought a brand new Ford Ka and specified an electric "factory fit" sunroof as an optional extra, the dealer explained that car would be supplied to the dealer from the factory without sunroof and the roof is actually installed at the dealer by a specialist who installs the roof and lowers the roof lining, etc. Apparantly this is common practice on models where a "factory fit" sunroof is available as optional extra.

I remember back in the 70's when retro fit sunroofs were all the rage. There was hell on when Hillman Avenger owners (Plymouth Cricket in the USA) had them done and later turned up for an MOT as it was an instant failure and complete write off because the roof carried a main structural member!

This same practice was even being followed by Rolls Royce Motors some twenty years or so ago. Perplexing really, for a company so synonymous with bespoke motor manufacture.

Same problem with any car having an aftermarket fitment. When you cut a hole in the roof you need to fit strengtheners to protect the passenger cell if the vehicle rolls and to stop the monocoque twisting.

Sunroofs fitted at time of manufacture have pressed edges and strengtheners welded into palce on the production line. After market one are made with a drill and jigsaw. I doubt if the fitters would spend hours touching up the edges with paint so it'll rust from day1.

Have had 'moon roofs' on all 3 toyotas and never had a problem although they can sometimes forget where they 'park' if the battery is disconnected when it is open. You can re-educate them though to get over this. Get one with a full length sun shield or buy a numbnuts baseball cap to wear backwards during the summer.
