installing zone valves

what does it mean when a zone valve says it can't be installed acuator facing down? does it mean with the bit with the motor upside down?
 

Would the diagram on the left cause problems when both valves were open as the water would take the easyiest route and just fow straight forward and go through the zone valve on the left and not tee off to the ova zone valve?
 
Either will do if you have balancing valves on the returns as you should.
 
No. Both circuits might be balanced by themselves, but not be balanced when both zone valves are open (one circuit might be less restrictive than the other. So you need valves on the return pipes to facilitate this. :)
 
I've never seen this flow restricters before when I've seen zoned heating systems. Are they always fitted?

Depends on the size of the system and how cheap the custard wants the job.

Yes, I would always fit lockshield valves on all the returns to balance them.
