Insulating CH pipes in Sub Floor

Hi all,

Ours is a 1950’s property with an air brick ventilated crawl space below the ground floor (With great access).

The CH pipes down there are of course in a cold environment with being that space being open to the outside air via the air bricks. I’m wondering how far I should go to insulate the flow and returns down there. I’ve already used 19mm thick foam lagging around the 22mm pipes which has hugely helped the boiler modulation.

I guess what I’m asking is, what is considered a “good” insulation practice for CH pipes in a ventilated sub floor? And if I want to take it further, what options do I have ontop of the lagging already there? I.e could I wrap stuff round the lagging to further improve the situation here?

Cheers

This is like the old hot rod question [there's probably a better name for it than this]:

Q: How fast can I go?
A: How much do you want to spend?

If you want to lag the lagging, nobody is going to stop you, it's your time and money. You just have to bear in mind the diminishing returns as you add more and more insulation.

I appreciate there’s a tipping point where it’s just not worth it anymore.

I imagine that point differs relative to where the pipes are though. Ie in my loft for the upstairs boiler all the pipes were both lagged and sat beneath 150mm of wool because i needed to insulate that space regardless. Probably overkill but that system runs extremely efficiently now.

The downstairs ch system though, my concern is that literally all the 22/15mm flow and returns are in the really cold sub floor void. I wondered what peoples general approach in that type of setup would be. Ie is it fairly common to do more than just lagging for that sort of space.
