I have an existing extension of my through lounge and kitchen. These extensions were done years ago and I don't think the floor is insulated. How can I get these insulated without incurring a huge expense.
There has been suggestions of installing underfloor heating, but due to heating expense, I very rarely put the central heating on. I want to focus on retaining the heat in my house by insulating as much as possible.

Do I get someone to dig up the floor and install some form of insulation? If so, what is my best option with regards to the materials, thickness etc?

Thank you.

Is the extention floor level or stepped down?
If stepped down, by how much??...pinenot

What are you trying to achieve? The cost of breaking up a floor to install insulation will be greater than turning up the heating and a new thick carpet, and you will get no savings or extra comfort.

Spend money elsewhere

The extension is step up. The same level as the rest of the house, but you need to step down to get outside to the garden. I hope that makes sense. There aren't any steps coming into the house.

The Kitchen is very very cold. It has 3 large windows and a door. They are double glazed and the extended roof is insulated. There is two layers of carpet tiles on the floor, but the floor still feels cold. Also, its a kitchen, so ideally I should have lino or some easy clean floor. Is there something, I can place on the floor which will keep the heat from escaping.
I don't have the heating on all the time as it is expensive. There are only 2 small radaitors in a big kitchen.

I apologise to the moderator. I had posted my inquiry in the wrong forum - windows not the buildings. I couldn't see how to edit that or delete my original post.

Stepped up but same level as house???
I'm trying to establish whether their is a variation between the extention and the the room/passageway where you gain access to it. From this it could be established whether you could add firm insulation with a timber topping floor. Could you possibly post a few pics of the ingress to the room(s) adjoining the extention?...pinenot

The cost (let alone disruption) of ripping up a floor to insulate it, will be expensive and have a pay-back time of many many years if at all.

Very little heat goes out of a floor, so if the room is cold then look to spend the money elsewhere - better heating system, increase radiator sizes, turn heating up. Or look to insulate the walls or ceiling
