Insulating Old Timber Frame

Hi,

Our house is a bit of a strange build. Built in 1974 it is a timber frame property but with precast concrete gable and party walls.

Our first floor joists run across the timber frame element, but where they meet the inner leaf wall there is no insulation, the joists simply sit on the inner leaf timber frame and meet the vapour permeable membrane which faces the cavity. There are concrete returns in the corners which the first joist sits in.

The timber frame element consists of foil backed plasterboard, then rockwool between the stud, Vapor permeable membrane, approx 50mm cavity and brick facing. The concrete elements are simply concrete inner leaf, formehydrate foam and then brick facing.

These gaps on the timber frame element are very well ventilated, and I think are loosing us quite a bit of heat. I was wondering what people thought we might be best doing with these? Is there any risk to the frame from any retrofitted insulation?

The attached photo was when we were back to brick, we did ask the plasterers to put some wool in the gaps, but on more recent inspection post having the PB back in place they haven’t really done that and have missed a most points. We would have to lift the floorboard to access this area to make any changes.

Thanks a lot in advance!
