When installing halogen spots in the ceiling, what do i do with the insulation to comply with part p/building regs? Do a simply put a fire hood over them then replace the insulation over the hood, or do i leave the insualtion of completly? I've tried looking in the "electricians guide to building regs" but cant seem to find an answer.

no not the hoods, just keep the insulation well away from the fittings, at least 8-10" all round, inc. transformers if L.V.

if possible build a wooden box around the lights. fire hoods were £13 a go last time i saw, but there are only nessecary where a fire barrier is present (between flats and between a garage and habitable space).
