just want to clarify one point if any one would be so kind

about to re-slate a pitched roof with wood sarking on , am i right to

1, put vertical batterns over the wooden sarking
2, breatherble membrain over vertical batterns
3, horizonal counter batterns
4, slates

if this is all correct how do things stand with the insulation! can i push it all the way up to the wood sarking on the inside or do i need an air gap

Put the membrane directly onto the rigid sarking

The insulating of the roof depends on what space you have and what you are doing.

You can full-fill the roof void between the rafters and then fit a vapour barrier to the underside before plaster boarding

Or you can leave a 50mm air gap under the sarking and then insulate between (and under) the rafters. You will need to vent the gap at the eaves and ridge

Or put he insulation on top of the sarking and then tile.

If you are doing this under building control, then you need to decide how thick and what type of insulation you need - which may limit the options
