So we called someone in. Once the freezer had been removed from under the worktop, it was found that the freezer's top was very wet, and the thermostat too.
Drying the freezer, stat and protecting the latter seems to have cured the tripping and erratic behaviour of the appliance, at least for now.
I am mystified how so much wet could have got on the freezer top, and would like suggestions as to the likelihood of the get around lasting, anything else we can do. Or should we be looking fairly soon for a replacement.
